The porn industry hit an all-time high in the ‘80’s. This was largely due to the innovation of the home video (Yep, I remember them too). The sale of videos (and later DVD’s) saw huge profits in the porn industry with the most popular stars earning thousand for each scene they were a part of.

The internet should have provided another boost to the industry as the whole world connected online.

The advent of porn on the tube sites.

When Youtube came to life, people began to realize that the internet was more than just a font of knowledge. Tube sites such as Youtube quickly became a great way to share home videos with the world. With everything from funny pet’s antics to holiday horrors it was only a matter of time before the tube sites went pornographic.

The good thing with tube sites is that they are free to view. Most of them make money through selling advertising space, which can make them a lucrative business.

The adult tube sites are often full of amateur videos of real couples having real sex. While there is nothing wrong with this, there have been cases where people, especially celebrities have had personal videos posted online with their consent or knowledge (remember Tulisa?).

The biggest problem with amateur porn is that there is no regulation. I guess you could argue that there shouldn’t be as it is two consenting adults doing what they do in the privacy of their own home. This is true, as long as both agree to it being broadcast to the world as well.

Why are tube sites bad for porn?

There are two reasons why tube sites are causing a problem for the porn industry.

Firstly, viewing figures have decreased. While there are some people who will still watch their favourite porn star in their latest film, there are those who prefer to watch amateur videos. This could be more due to the fact that it is free, however it is taking income from the industry.

The second problem with tube sites is the increasing amount of pirated porn on the tube sites.

Video piracy has had a massive impact on the industry at every level. The loss of income has seen the stars of porn taking a large pay cut of more than 50% and production costs have been slashed which also affects the quality of the end product.

Some might say that it is not all doom and gloom where tube sites are concerned. It has been stated that these sites have caused the popularity of some stars to increase, due to the increase of access to the videos and the power of Social Media.

While this is somewhat good for the stars themselves, what is the point of being popular in an industry with little job opportunities?

 Porn bites back.

As with all copyrighted material, there are steps which can be taken to combat piracy. The porn industry is utilizing the law to try to prevent their videos appearing on tube sites but this has little effect or no effect. The reason that these procedures are ineffective is the number of tube sites makes them difficult to police, although companies are issuing takedown letters the videos often appear on another site just a few days later.

The industry and its stars are now fighting back with the Pay for your Porn campaign with the payforyourporn.com website. You can show your support for the campaign using #payforyourporn on Twitter, we already have.
